David A. Saltzman, RHU, DIA, is a transformation strategist and thought leader with more than 35 years experience in the retail, wholesale, technology and administrative insurance arenas. He is Director of Marketing for Borislow Insurance, and Captivated Health, based in Methuen, MA.
David produces and hosts the highly acclaimed weekly “ShiftShapers” podcast, which showcases industry leaders who are taking the transformative shifts in the insurance and employee benefits industry and shaping them into new business models, products and best practices. The podcast reaches nearly 10,000 insurance professionals.
Additionally, he serves as a facilitator for NAHU’s “Platinum Advisor” educational mastermind sessions, which bring together the country’s top benefits advisors and other insurance professionals who collaboratively create solutions to challenges in the wholesale, and retail insurance markets.
In demand nationally as a public speaker, David presents on subjects such as brand strategy, practice diversification, consumerism, leadership, and strategic planning. He has served on the faculty of the national Consumer Directed Health Care Conference and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Miami School of Business. Additionally, David has been a speaker and moderator at the Employer Health Care Reform Congress.
He has shared the stage with Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury John Snow, former NAIC Chairman Kevin McCarty and others. In his educational series “Speaking of Books” for the NAHU Educational Foundation he interviewed thought leaders such as Regina Herzlinger, Michael Cannon, Clayton Christensen, Arnold King, Dave Racer and others.
For the last 16 years he has written the monthly benefits column “To Your Good Health” in National Underwriter Life & Health magazine. David is a contributor to “Healthcare Reform: An Employer’s and Insurance Professionals Survival Guide” published by Health Care Reform Magazine and he is also the author of the upcoming book, “Secrets of the ShiftShapers”.
David has been deeply involved in health reform since the early 1990’s and served on the Board of Directors for the Florida Community Health Purchasing Alliance, advised key members of the Florida legislature and lobbied for common sense reforms, bringing access, choice and affordability to the state’s residents.
He began his insurance career in 1981with State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America as a producer, trainer and sales and brokerage manager. In 1984 he founded D.A. Saltzman & Associates, an agency focused on providing financial solutions to businesses and their executives and employees.
He joined the National Association of Health Underwriters in 1983 and in 1996 served as the association’s national president. In 2003 he received the organization’s highest honor, the “Harold R. Gordon Memorial Award”. He is also a former chairman of the NAHU Educational Foundation.
In 1997 he accepted a position as President and Chief Technology Officer of Administrative Services, Inc., a multi-state third-party administrator that created and administered self-insured health, retirement and disability services to both Taft-Hartley and commercial clients.
David went on to serve as Regional Director of Consumerism for Humana, Inc., and in 2007 became part of the senior management team at Carolina Care Plan (a division of Medical Mutual of Ohio). In 2011 & 2012 during his work with EmpowHR, Inc. he was responsible for the creation of The Benefit Experience, a cutting edge application that helps employees select and enroll in a variety of benefit plans while automatically and simultaneously creating sales of voluntary market products.
